Animal Care Volunteering in Peru
Animal care volunteering in Peru offers hands-on opportunities to support animal welfare, conservation, and ethical care while working closely with local organizations and communities. These projects focus on responsible, long-term impact rather than short-term or exploitative volunteering.
Our animal care volunteering program includes three distinct projects based in and around Cusco. Each project works with different animals and environments but shares a commitment to ethical treatment, proper care, and meaningful volunteer involvement.
Proyecto Perú is an incredible organisation. I stayed with a lovely local family for the week and got to experience Peruvian home cooking which was such a treat. Volunteering at the dog shelter during the mornings was a great way of practicing my Spanish and playing with some very cute furry friends.

Overview of Animal Care Volunteering
Animal welfare challenges in Peru vary widely depending on location, resources, and environmental pressures. Community-based animal care projects play an important role in improving living conditions for domestic animals, supporting rescue and rehabilitation efforts, and promoting responsible animal care practices.
Animal care volunteers contribute through daily care tasks, maintenance, and support activities that help organisations operate sustainably. These placements are practical, immersive, and designed for volunteers who want to make a tangible contribution while learning about animal welfare in a Peruvian context.
Projects
Dog Shelter Project
“Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”
Project description
The Callejeritos Dog shelter in Cusco is run by a Peruvian couple. They have been rescuing dogs for a very long time and currently take care of more than 125 dogs, cats, and even a horse. They rescue abused, mistreated, and injured dogs from the street and try to save as many as possible.
Unfortunately, in Peru not everyone takes care of their dogs, and mistreatment is common. Therefore, this dog shelter also focuses on educating people about health and sterilization. They organize campaigns and try to educate the local community about how to take care of their dogs.
