How to Learn Spanish Faster Even as a Beginner

Learning a new language can sometimes be overwhelming. But it’s also incredibly rewarding. This challenge can be discouraging to many new speakers, making conversational fluency seem far away. The truth is, with the right approach you can improve much faster than you think. I want to explain how to learn Spanish faster even as a beginner.

From my own experience learning Spanish and living in Cusco, Peru, I have realized that learning a new language isn’t about perfection-it’s about consistency, immersion and actively practicing the language every day.

Focus on the Most Important Words First

A common mistake beginners make, is trying to learn everything at once. As with almost all areas of language acquisition, it is a process, you build off the basics so it’s important to focus on those first. You can effectively communicate with just the basics, in fact the most common 1000 words make up the majority of everyday conversations.

To start, try to work on useful vocabulary such as numbers, directions, food and greetings. You can even work on essential verbs such as estar, ser, ir, hacer and tener. It might help you to even learn whole phrases instead of individual words. Phrases like “Cuánto cuesta?” or “¿Dónde está…?” can help you communicate faster and with ease in real conversations.

Start Speaking From Day One

Many learners wait until they feel they are ready or comfortable to begin speaking. Unfortunately that day never really comes without doing it first. The fastest way to learn and improve is to start speaking immediately. Even if you only know a few phrases. This is essential to the learning process.

You don’t need to have perfect grammar to communicate. It’s the effort that matters. One of the best ways to learn is to speak with native speakers. In my experience speaking with locals here in Peru is what improved my progress the most. They will appreciate the effort and they will usually help you correct any mistakes you’ve made. Everyday, simple actions such as ordering food, or asking for directions can build your confidence.

Immerse Yourself in Spanish Everyday

Immersion is one of the fastest ways to learn a new language. The more you are surrounded by Spanish, the easier it will be for you. It will become natural for you.

Programs like Proyecto Peru are great for this type of immersion. We offer a variety of programs for language exposure. Learning in a place like Cusco can be very beneficial for new learners with Peruvian Spanish being one of the most neutral forms of Spanish and the easiest to pick up. You can learn more about the benefits of an immersion program in Cusco at our blog post “Why is Peruvian Spanish Considered So Neutral?”

If you aren’t in the position to do an exchange or immersion program there are still ways you can immerse yourself. You can do things like changing your phone settings to Spanish, watching t.v. shows or movies in Spanish, or following spanish speaking influencers on social media. These small changes will influence you a lot over time.

Create a Simple Daily Routine

Like I said before, consistency is key when learning a new language. Even just 30 minutes a day can help you progress much faster if you stay consistent.

A simple routine could include:

  • Writing a few sentences or journaling
  • Speaking practice
  • Vocabulary practice
  • Listening (videos or music)

By practicing different skills every day, you can improve much faster than if you were just studying one area

Don’t be Afraid to Make Mistakes

Many people can be discouraged when they make mistakes, but the truth is, mistakes are necessary for growth and learning. It’s one of the fastests ways to improve. Most people will appreciate the effort, and understand what you mean despite errors.

Instead of worrying about being perfect, focus on communicating your ideas, most people will understand you. Confidence will help you grow much faster than perfection ever will.

Travel or Study Abroad if You Can

If you are able and have the opportunity, traveling or doing a study abroad will help you accelerate your language learning process. Living in a Spanish speaking environment almost forces you to learn the language.

As a student who did a Spanish immersion program in the states for the majority of her education, truly nothing compares to living in a country when it comes to language learning. During my time in Cusco, I noticed how fast my Spanish improved simply because I was always surrounded by it. I used it every day at work, in daily conversations and with my host family.

Another thing to note is when you are in an environment with people who are at the same level as you in the language learning process, it can be easy to fall back on your native language. Don’t fall back on what’s easy, let yourself try and fail a few times before you go back to your native language. It will benefit all parties.

Ultimately the biggest tip I have is to be consistent with your new language. Immersion is a great way to learn quickly and programs like Proyecto Peru can help you organize a program that best suits you and your level. To find the perfect program for you visit our website.
