Why learn Spanish in Peru?

Spanish is the most spoken language in Peru, used by 89% of the population. Peruvians speak their Spanish clear and do not speak as fast as in other Spanish speaking countries. We believe that an important part of cultural immersion is being able to speak the local language. Because we try to engage in the most responsible volunteering possible, we ask most volunteers and interns to study Spanish classes in order to improve their ability to connect with the members of our community.

Background history of the Spanish language

Spanish is one of the many languages derived from the Latin language, born after the fall of the Roman Empire. This language has been influenced by many others, such us Greek, Arabic and native languages from the Americas.

The Spanish language emerged after years of invasions in the Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain) throughout the Middle Ages. The Moors from Northern Africa and Visigoths from Central Europe invaded some parts of Spain, but later these parts were later recovered by Christians who spoke Vulgar Latin (non-classical Latin spoken by Roman citizens and soldiers and in the places where the Roman Empire extended its reach).

It is said that modern Spanish was established in the Kingdom of Castille, in the city of Toledo. Now the Castilian Spanish is the most spoken around this country, while other regions speak Basque and Catalan.

Spanish across the Atlantic

The Americas were exposed to this language through Spanish explorers in the 16th and 17th centuries. Nowadays, Spanish in the most spoken language in the Americas, where its speakers now outnumber those in Spain.

Being the second most widely spoken native language in the world (and the fourth most widely spoken overall with around 460 million speakers), the Spanish language is one worth learning.
