My Marketing and Communication Internship Experience in Cusco

Marketing Intern in Cali with volunteer and host mom

My marketing internship with Proyecto Peru was one of the most enriching learning experiences of my life. It challenged me personally and professionally, pushed me out of my comfort zone, and helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect.

Proyecto Peru is a community-focused organization that provides authentic cultural and linguistic immersion experiences in Cusco by offering enriching volunteering programs, internships, language immersion, tours, accommodation, cultural activities, and much more.

While here, I had the privilege of working in a multicultural office where Peruvian, French, Dutch, British, and American colleagues collaborate every day. The diversity in the workplace made this experience even more meaningful, as I constantly learned from different perspectives, cultures, and communication styles.

Professional Growth and Meaningful Tasks

One of the things I appreciated most about this internship is the flexibility and relevance of the work I was doing. My responsibilities were closely aligned with the marketing experience I hoped to gain, and there was always a variety of projects to get involved in.

My main ongoing task was creating authentic video and photo-based content for social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. This included planning, capturing, curating, and posting content that reflected the mission and ethos of Proyecto Peru. Producing quality work takes time, and it was always my primary area of focus.

In addition to content creation, my projects included:

  • Organizing video and photo assets
  • Composing copy for posts on social media platforms
  • Creative projects such as flyer and brochure making
  • Updating and curating parts of our website
  • Assisting with client sales
  • Directing clients from social media channels to the appropriate communication platforms
  • Writing blog posts for the website

The workload was always fair and balanced, and I feel grateful to have been part of a school that values connection, whether it’s with coworkers, local partners, volunteers, or students. Strong operational systems and genuine human care define the workplace culture, and it shows. I saw how my coworkers supported one another and how friendships naturally form within the office. This sense of community made my experience even more meaningful.

Learning Through Challenges

As beautiful as this experience was, I had my challenges, too. One thing I learned and highly recommend to other interns is the importance of setting specific, realistic, and relevant goals. These goals help maintain focus, guide productivity, and ensure that your work aligns with the organization’s needs. Here are some of the goals I’ve set for myself:

  • Keep a record of projects on Google Sheets – include expected due dates and personal notes
  • Write down three things to improve on each day in my journal
  • Visit every volunteer project that Proyecto Peru offers
  • Make an effort to connect with new students or volunteers during orientation every Monday
  • Attend program social and cultural activities
  • Communication is key – communicate needs, wants and any struggles throughout the internship

Setting goals like these kept me grounded and accountable while helping me grow throughout the internship.

A Home Away From Home

Marketing and Operations Interns enjoying Cusco

One of the biggest blessings of my time in Cusco was my homestay family. Staying with them has added depth, comfort, and warmth to my entire experience. Home-cooked meals (something many people take for granted) have become a highlight of my day, especially after long hours of work.

Every morning, I sat with my host mother, Lea, to enjoy breakfast and conversation. These small daily moments have become cherished memories. My family was incredibly flexible and supportive as I juggled travel, university work, and internship responsibilities. From the moment they picked me up from the airport, I felt welcomed and now, I truly feel like I’m part of their family.

I even plan to come back to Cusco in January 2026, and it’s comforting to know that I will always have a home waiting for me here.

Looking Ahead

Everything I learned during this internship will help me in my future career. Marketing plays a crucial role in nearly every industry, and these skills will serve me well, whether I join a new company or even start my own someday. The lessons I learned here extend far beyond technical skills; they’ve helped me grow personally, understand new cultures, build confidence, and create meaningful connections.

I am grateful for this experience, for the people I’ve met, and for the city that has become another home to me. Cusco and Proyecto Peru have shaped me in ways I will carry with me forever.

Five years ago, I came to South America with zero knowledge of the Spanish language. I thought that I would get far with hands and footwork, but nothing could be further from the truth. Well, in the end you will get there, but some basic knowledge of Spanish is actually indispensable as it makes traveling a lot easier. In addition, it is nice if you can chat a little with the locals. You immediately get a lot of respect if they only see that you are trying!

Checklist before you travel in Peru

Proyecto Peru helps you with the preparation for your trip to Peru. Below we have listed the most important subjects.

How long does the trip to Peru take?

Peru is a very big country, about 2.5 times bigger than France. So be aware of your travel preparation, and that it takes a lot of time to travel these distances. Between the coast and the inner land lies the Andean chain. There are some peaks between 3,000 and 4,000 meters (if not higher!) That you have to cross.
